Anyone can make their own biogas plant at home in their own garage. In fact, biogas which you can produce from your rubbish can be used for cooking or heating. It would be lower quality then from local net, but no bill. When it comes to make your own biogas, there are two possibilities available to you. It will be run immediately in a home range or collected in a tank for winter use.
Anywise, all you need are vessels, a low power pump between them, and connection pipes.
A central reaction vessel - Digester may be a simple metal barrel, but storage vessel has to be strengthen and ball shaped due to safety. If you haven't an idea how to build it safely, it's better to purchase professional equipment.
Making your own biogas is a simple process since it is made from home rubbish. Avoid getting into reactor antibiotics, chemical, disinfection means, metals, glass and plastics.
Bacterias decompose the organic matter in anaerobic environment into digester. Biogas is an intermediate product of their metabolism.
For successful life cycle of all microorganisms inside the digester special conditions must be secured. Mandatory factors for that are the following:
- Anaerobic environment - active functioning of bacteria is possible only in oxygen-free conditions. Therefore water environment into reactor/ digester is must. It will maintain pH level 7 and avoid different reaction vessels for hydrolysis/ oxidation and acetic acid formation/ methanogenesis.
- Temperature - the optimum temperature for mode for all bacteria groups is 35-400C gage.
- Fermentation period – at least 8 hour, but it depend of many factors. The quantity of produced biogas is different during the fermentation. Process starts intensive but within the time gas quantity decreases. Then comes the moment when you have to get out biomass from the digester and put it to fertilize your garden.
- Particle size - The smaller the better. Smaller the rubbish particles are better decomposed by bacteria. Fermentation period are shorter and biogas production faster.
Note this: Biogas is mostly methane. Be careful in handling the gas.
